Why is this bucket bad, cant get it clean ever again???

As cheap as another bucket is and knowing this stuff can hide in cracks you cant even see. Get another bucket.

Im one of those people. So this looks pretty tasty to me.

So in this case, what does the added 'flavor' do for the beer? Does it make it sour or sharp or what? I would assume that it would be relatively easy to achieve this on purpose by cutting corners on sanitation or not bothering with it in th first place. Nothing wrong with it if that's what you like, that's for sure.

Yup a infection. The quicker you drink and the colder it is the slower the process. This is a sanitation issue. That bucket is toast for normal beers.

Yeah, buckets are cheap. I would think bleach followed with campden might do the trick. But I would not ferment in it again.I guess you're not on the LBG bus trip today.......

So there is really no real way to save this bucket. I have it soaking in a 2/3 water 1/3 bleach solution right now. Ill keep it soaking overnight. I dont think anything could live in it after this.Dan

Trip to the zoo? There were some LBG peeps at the Brew At The Zoo tonight, I believe. Didn't recognize any members myself, but my buddy who was running the 23rd Street Brewery booth said some cat from Lawrence was talking about their club and the intricacies of brewing with him. Had pretzels around his neck too. :)Great time tonight by the way, but ended up with over 700 attendees instead of the ~300 they originally counted on, so we started running out of beer a bit early. Bought out a liquor store of Tallgrass and Freestate to keep the party going though. This was the first time they've done this, so next year should be awesome.

I am not that conservative with buckets. I also don't really do anything to the inside of mine to scratch them. I have had infections in the past, and I have reused the buckets. I did monitor them (I have a good number of buckets) for subsequent fermentations, and they seemed fine. Some of my buckets I've been using for years.I am making it a habit of storing star san in my fermentation buckets now, circulating it every now and then, so I tend to think that should help in the long run.

You can reuse the bucket, but you are taking the chance that you killed any remaining bugs. So weigh the cost of a new bucket against the odds of losing a future batch of beer. Have you retraced your steps to see the most likely place the infection was introduced?
