Well I've been wanting to learn more about yeast, and learn how to catch/propagate wild yeast (and just make starters), so I finally decided to invest in a couple of flasks and some petri dishes. Next thing on the list was to build a stir plate. Overall the build was pretty easy and straight forward. The only things I actually had to buy were the potentiometer and the rocker switch...I'm probably gonna buy better screws (that can be flush on the top) and pull the coasters I hot glued on, off.Posted ImageThe knob for the potentiometer was pulled off my old guitar.Posted ImageI found that that coasters and glue added a little too much insulation from the magnetic field. Once I find some screws that'll lay flush with the wood I'll be pulling em off.Posted ImageHad to chisel the crap out of the front piece to fit the switches.Posted ImageEffing science.

Looks good! I have seen several homemade ones that, while still way more than adequate, wouldn't get a vortex like that. You might want to look into getting a copy of your water report from the looks of things. :P

I used a much larger fan then most people...best part is, that's only half way :D I can get a similar sized vortex on "0" as others can get with their fans turned all the way up!wait, so water isn't supposed to be that blue? shit.

Yup, 1" stirbar (using a regular HDD magnet) I believe it's a 120mm but it could be around 140mm too...I just grabbed the biggest fans I could find in the parts pile at work. I was gonna use it for my keezer, but wanted to get the stir plate done first.
