Usually Id rather spend my limited free time brewing than building stuff but that one I think I can do pretty easily. Ships with prime too!! Do we like the STC1000 over a ranco or johnson mostly because of price or are there other reasons?Heres the one I order. I've built 3 of them.https://www.amazon.c...t/dp/B008KVCPH2

Looks like only 10 amps. Doesn't that rule out the fridge/freezer?Looks like they are on Amazon too. Be curious to see if anyone has used them.https://www.amazon.c.../ref=pd_cp_hi_1

Nah, but you need to check first.

I built this using the refrigerating unit out an old dorm fridge.

This is the cheapest way to get a controller that will automatically change from heat to cool as needed. I think the ones that will are ~$100. They only take a couple of hours to build. Check the tag on your fridge/freezer for amp draw. Mine are ~3A. In the pic of mine, don't put your outlet inside the box like I did. Put in on from the outside and cover it with a plate---looks better and is easier to cut the hole.My parts list looks like this:1. STC $182. 5X7 project box from radio shack: $7 (I like the STC in front, outlet in back)3. 3-prong Cord rated for 10A: $0-$74. Black wall outlet with cover plate: $35. A couple wire nuts and ~3ft of 16ga wire6. 2 hrs timeDo we like the STC1000 over a ranco or johnson mostly because of price or are there other reasons?

Thanks. I would want it to auto-switch for sure.
…and I like your build for the STC. I am ordering one today.

I'm fairly certain they can but I haven't wired one to do that myself.

well first i get to know the yeast and make sure they know who's boss. i also spend some time team building with them. maybe have a few beers with them but i make sure to not get too friendly.
oh yeah - i also stick them in the chest freezer with the temperature controller.
