so i put the brewtan in the kettle while it was draining. so now there is some water in both kettle and MT with brewtan in it. i'm going to wait a minute and see if one or both turn green.
so if nothing turns green here I'm WTFing big time.

nothing turning green yet....
ugh. so now I really have to wonder about the water I used for the starter.
here's to hoping it was the MT so that the starter water is A-OK since it was never in the MT???

But it was green in the kettle before you moved it to the tun/cooler, right?

so is there a health/safety or flavor concern with this reaction?
i mean, if it's purely a color issue I'd never notice it in the final beer (porter). this thing is going to be black. i just don't want to make perfect wort now and possibly mess something up with the starter made with the water that turned green probably due to brewtan interacting with something (not sure what???).

maybe just a little bit.
it didn't REALLY turn green until it went in the mash tun.

...and it probably splashed a bit on the way in… Oxygen is to blame!

I just read through this. This is very weird. I have always added brewtan after my grain, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Curious how it looks after you mash in.

yeah - it's just going to look black so I won't really know.
it's been a while since I've had this much of a potty mouth on a brew day.

Can you score some RO at the grocery?

I've never really looked. I'm not sure.
I think I might be doing some experiments in the future with small amounts of water and brewtan.

This is not your first brewtan batch so that is what puzzles me.

me too. did the brewtan last time leave behind some kind of residue in my tun that is now reacting with this batch???
I've never been too crazy about cleaning my MT. I just dump the grain and immediately rinse it out with hot water. that's it.
