So I'm going about my normal routine here.  I put calcium chloride, gypsum and brewtan (a little over 1/2 tsp in over 11 gals) in my strike water as I got it up to temp.  I noticed after adding the brewtan that the water looked slightly greenish.

now I've put my strike water into the mash tun (cooler) and I just went out to check the temp and now the strike water is a dark green color.  no grain has been added but I'm sure there is a little bit of grain residue in there from the last batch.  thing is, this didn't happen the last time I used brewtan (n=1).

you can also see the mash residue that was left from the last batch.  is the brewtan interacting with this?  i've never super thoroughly cleaned that stuff out of the mash tun to be honest

Yeah, there's got to be something reacting or left over. Dump the water and start over.

I would dump it and test a small amount of water in there.

And that was clear right?  I would say that is fine.

Did you try tasting the gross water?  Not saying I would just wondering

The only thing brewtan did for me was create a slightly orange-ish / tannish foam which I think I posted a picture of. Never saw anything like that. Brewtan is supposed to react/bond/chelate anything metallic right? Is it possible that there is a high level of copper or iron in this water? I have been following the brewtan thread on AHA (now on page 57 or so) and no one has mentioned this.

I am sure i did a bad thing but I gave Morty Denny's and Joe's e-mail to try and contact them about this.  I have not seen any mention of this in the experimental brewing tests either.

The water in the kettle was green too or only when you put it into the MT? I would do it again with brewtan, personally although I understand the apprehension. The only question not asked already is: shouldn't you be working now? :P

it was slightly greenish in the kettle but after putting it in the mash tun it started getting darker and darker.

We do have Joe Formanek's email address too but I'll be honest... I emailed him right when the podcast came out and he never responded. I'd try it one more time and if it happens again, screw it until you find out why. I know that's another hour or something but that's what I would do.

He did reply to some of the Experimental Brewing e-mail chains.
