I do 2 L starters for normal-sized ales. 2 liters of water, 200 grams of DME. For lagers and big ales, I double that. For anything larger than that, I brew a batch of beer with the yeast and repitch the entire yeast cake.

Guess I can chalk this up to learning, or I could have pitched it directly and saved myself this step haha ha. So the question is if I have a 2liter flask, do I need a bigger one for 2 liter starters? I'm hoping not!

No, you can squeak by with a 2L flask. Hey at least you know how to make starters now so it wasn't wasted effort.

different brands of flasks will have different amounts of head space so the best way is to do a dry run. take 200g of table sugar and throw it into your flask with 2L of water and see if you can have mild vortex going without spilling

I would think that fermcap or another defoamer would be a must in a starter pushing the size envelope of a flask like this

I went home for lunch and my starter has a nice ring of foam around the edge and some foam in the vortex. There was none this morning so I guess its working now.Dan

I think that with a bigger starter, I will boil the water in a pan then place the contents into a glass 1 gallon jug once it has cooled of followed by putting it on the stir plate. I am hoping that this will work.

For ales, I either do 2 qt. with 6 oz. DME or 3 qt. with 9 oz.

A gallon jug won't work with a stir plate.
