I can't get the stir bar to stay spinning in the ones I have tried

I used to have that problem. I started using a 1 1/2-2 in. "dumbbell" bar and they work great now.

Hmmmmm, guess I called it the wrong name. It looks like a normal stir bar, but has a ring around the middle.

Yep, tht looks like what I'm using. Maybe my jugs have flattter bottoms t han normal ( boy, is that a set up for around here?). Maybe my new stir plate has a stronger magnet. I got the stir plate and bar at the same time so I can't really say which made the difference.

I am thinking my homemade stirplate is the culprit, I need to look at getting stronger magnets

I believe the dumbbell style stir bars can be used with curved bottoms.I personally only have two 2L flasks. I typically only make a starter for the first beer in my series, from there, I either pitch the entire cake (if doing a big beer), or I collect some of the slurry and repitch that.I was almost able to get a 5L flask, but that deal went bust before they shipped my order, and I'm not sure if I'm sold on the idea of making a 4L starter over making a smaller beer and then saving the yeast.

I use glass, 1 gallon cider jugs on a stir plate. My 2000 ml flash wasn't large enough for what I wanted to.Try a pair of o-rings on the outer edges of the stir bar shown.

I have 3 of them that would beg to differ.

If you have some with flat bottoms, that'll work but they're hard to find.

They're not completely flat. They have a slight hump in them.
