:rolf:Honestly, build what you can afford with the means you have. You can always tweak down the road.

it's supposed to be fun after all :D

while we are "Mass-debating," what is the general thought on this braided manifold?https://www.homebrew...0-qt-igloo.htmlUnlike the bazooka screen, it's a circular SS braid.

I started out with a homemade version of that, I honestly had no better results (batch sparging) than with a 12 inch weighted braid

That's essentially what I use. It works fine, and a slight twist in the braid allows the loop can be arranged so it stays firmly against the bottom of the tun. Like Mic said, though, it doesn't seem to work any better than a straight braid, otherwise.

where do you get a SS spring?

Any local welding/fab shop. Ask for about 2 ft of SS MIG welding wire, then wrap it around a pencil to form one.I've always had a spring in my braid, so can't say whether it's needed or not, but I've had up to 50% wheat and oats in my tun, never use rice hulls, and never had a slow or stuck runoff

The only real reason I went with the manifold is because I was afraid I would screw up or smash the braid when using the mash paddle to stir things up.Dan

Mine is a homemade version of this. I also have slits under the T. So I guess I have a combination braid-manifold. I am not sure the circular helps, but it just worked out in my pot.

Go big or go home. Dan

It is what I had already, but nice that it can handle most brews.

You can make any size 5 gallon batch with that cooler and just about any 10 gallon batch as well. Cheers,Rich

LOL! I'll be honest... I've been very happy with my cpvc manifold doing both batch and fly sparging. But I do acknowledge that there is more than one way to skin a cat... unless his name is Orville, then instead of skinning him, you stuff him and attach propellers to him... wait.. what? Oh yeah, that's in the PH! :cheers:Denny, I'm happy I met you here. Otherwise I might never have tried using Rye in my beer.

You're fly sparging, too???? Dude, yer out of the will! :)

Try it...then give it up and get back to batch sparging!

A pump and a float switch are your friends. I can go sit down and have lunch or dinner with the family while the sparge is taking place. Without those tools, I would likely still batch sparge.
