Since it's made of grain, it's R'gebot compliant. Not that I give a shit about the R'gebot. Remember, it was about the taxes, not the beer.

There's 40 pints in a 5 gallon corny, so if 1 drop gets you where you want in a pint of beer, then you can add 40 drops to the keg to get to the same color. Or 53.3 drops if you dose a 12 oz glass.

I add it to the kettle, pull some wort with a Pyrex measuring cup, look at the color, adjust if needed.

I've used it a few times but never in an Alt, but it is similar - I suppose being huskless helps. I've noticed that with roasted rye too.

My efficiency on this one was abysmal, you might target 1.048 or 50.

is carapils inappropriate for this style? how about aromatic? just curious...

I say absolutely no carapils. If you used melanoidin, I'd keep it really low...like undetectable.

And I will have to disagree. Lots of ways to get there but IMO melanoidin belongs there - easier than doing a decoction. Not that an outstanding Alt can be made without it but I never leave it out after a lot of tries. carapils, yeah, ditch it.

alright - carapils is out. I do like aromatic so I think I'll keep that in at about 1/4lb.

It depends if you want to try to clone a traditional alt, or create your own FrankenAlt.
