My experience with flaked oats is that they provide very little in the way of flavor. The kind of flavor I see getting completely lost in a beer like this. But they would bring the body/silkiness and that's what I assumed you guys were going for, no?

I have not found oats to bring either body or silkiness...heresy, yes, but that's been my observation.  They have actually seemed to thin the body.

By then I will be drinking mine and will be able to let you know if you should brew it or move on.  I still think it is going to make a good beer.

alright - i ordered the yeast and some other items to get my order up to free shipping levels.  hopefully it doesn't freeze on it's way to me.  i don't know what fedex/ups does for storage.  someone is pretty much always home at my house so it won't sit outside for long.

So, what will our next collaboration be?  I am thinking a lighter style beer for hot weather.  Saison maybe?

you need to do a lager of some kind.  what kinds do you like?

i try to make an oktoberfest each year.  i would also like to make a bo pils before summer since i have czech saaz hops.  if neither of these options sound good something that could qualify as "fest like" would be good though so that I can have something to bring out in september.

I do.  I was still thinking of some kind of Vienna, or O-fest.  But I am open to anything.

well what the hell why not try it now!?  I'm back to where you started with a little more oatmeal.

I had just started toying with it and I was at the following for 5g.

8.00 # -Two Row

2.00 # - Vienna

1.00 # - Oats (MOAR OATS!!!)

0.75 # - C-40

Hops

Chinook @ 60 - 35-40IBU (I think shooting for 45 IBU overall would be good, I don't want this to get into IPA territory with bitterness)

0.5oz Cascade @20 (lowered the 20 min additions b/c I feel like these are kind of borderline for adding much flavor)

0.5oz Columbis @20

1.0oz Centennial @5

1.0oz Cascade@0

1.0oz Centennial @0

2.0oz Centennial DH

1.0oz Columbus DH

just to be clear - this is what I'm running with.  with 70% efficiency the predicted gravity is 1.059 using my calculations.

I think I was shooing for 35-40 overall.  I was going with 1.5 oz at 60.

My brewing sheet gives me 1.054 @70% I am good with that and would be happy with that gravity.

I plan to brew mine Sunday seeing the yeast was not ready last week.

i'll have to e-mail you what i think the potential for the various grains are to see how it matches up.  I'll knock down my IBUs to sub 40.  I think it's at 42 IBU right now so it will just be a tweak.
