I stopped into my LHBS today with the idea of getting some prepacked 5-lb bags of Rahr Pale Ale malt. When I was entering the store, a guy was walking out with a sack and I thought, "AHA! A big bag!" so I asked what they had. Rahr Pilsner, Canada Malting 2-row, a couple different English malts and Belgian Pale Ale (Dingemans) which was the most expensive. I ended up getting the Canada Malting 2-row. I plan to use this malt for "standard ales" like Blondes, Cream ales, Pale Ales, Red Ales, Amber Ales, etc. Does anyone have an opinion on it? It was the best value but since I've never tried it, I wonder if I chose wrong. I plan to brew a Cream Ale (a variation of Deerslyr's) with it tomorrow. Cheers.

I use it all the time. I like it. I also use their pale ale malt which I find very good.

Was my go to malt for American beers up until this last grain order. Only reason I changed was because it was not available.

Another thumbs up. Their wheat and pilsner are pretty nice too.

This is a relief. I used to buy whatever grain was available or relatively inexpensive but I eventually realized that there is a difference. The Rahr Pale Ale malt is very nice as is the Gambrinus Pale Ale Malt. I went through a sack of Briess 2-row which a few of you gave a thumbs-down but I thought it was okay. I just opened this bag to measure some of it out for the beer tomorrow and the look and aroma of it seems very nice. Thanks for the help... I feel mucho better about it now.

Me too. I think in our last bulk grain buy it was something like 26 or 27 a bag now. Still very cheap.

I've used it for years and probably have 10-12 sacks of it right now. I use their pale, 2-row, Munich and pils. Good stuff and priced right.

It's the same as all of the North Country Malting group, right? I've used it a lot and like it. Can't get pallets anymore without the business permit or whatever you have to have.

Yeah, we were grandfathered when they made that switch.

When's the last time you ordered from them. They've changed their policies again.

They told our club we are their biggest customer in the midwest. We just ordered another two full pallets. Probably get to eight for the year.

Was this in the last month, because they've turned down some clubs just recently? One that I know of ordered quit a bit from them.

I think they just don't want to deal with people ordering 2 sacks of grain.

I don't think they've ever dealt with orders that small have they? I thought the minimum was one pallet, which is 40-something bags. I think the least we've ever done was 2-3 pallets.

I remember one time ordering one sack of malt from them. That was about 5 years ago though.
