The king of beers joins the peasants in the craft brew section. Budweiser American Ale ($7/6-pack) is a new American-style ale with rich amber color and big NO flavor. It's what microbrew ale would taste like if they had the billion dollar R&D department of Anheuser-Busch.

Exactly right. That's why I had high hopes for the pale ale.

That stuff sucked, at least the one I almost finished.

I think it comes down to this: There are many, many people who believe that beer is yellow, fizzy and tastes like Bud Light (or whatever) and that's it. No matter how many people seem to be moving towards craft beer or broadening their horizons, there will still be 1000 people for every one of them who just want to stop off at the local joint for a "beer" and beer means Bud, Miller or Coors. This is more true in some areas than it is in other areas but it's still true. It may be an age thing but not necessarily. I hear great uncles or others who say things like, "I can't believe you would fall for that and pay those prices... they're just trying to separate you from your money by raising the price for something that doesn't taste as good as... [insert bland American lager beer name here]". It's a slow migration to craft beer and IT IS happening, but it's slow.

If I find myself in Mexico or the Caribbean, I drink the local beer and I'm happy to have it. It's fresh, it's inexpensive and hey, it's 85° outside. I am leaving for Playa del Carmen in a few weeks and plan to have a few Dos Equis Ambers, Victorias, Leons and Indios. A beach, some palm trees, warm weather and one of those straw-canopied beachside shacks and I'm good.

Sorry to hijack, but the whole Blue Moon "witbier" thing got me thinking and I have a couple of observations for the collective.(1). The first time I tasted Blue Moon, I was expecting a witbier.....NOT!! I got a big corn flavor and aroma and the mouth feel was way off.....made me understand why they like to serve it to neophytes with an orange slice.....not unpleasant, but certainly not fulfilling expectations of a witbier by any stretch if the imagination.(2). Hoegaarden is often held up as the reference to the style, but IMHO it has changed quite a bit over the years.....lighter mouth feel and less flavorful.(3). I have recently become intrigued by Blanche De Bruxelles.....it has more body and creaminess (I believe from oats) and therefore can support more of the flavors from spices and fermentation esters and stay in balance.....real nice stuff.....

I'm just sitting down and tasting a Hoegaarden tonight. I must admit it is very tasty.

Better when the weather is warming up or it's already warm outside. I find that I brew (and drink) with the seasons... it's a sickness. :P

True. I can see where this would be a big hit when It is really hot outside. I just needed to get this tasting off my plate (glass)

Someone else mentioned that they thought Hoegaarden had changed a little bit. I haven't had one in awhile but the first time I tried it I could see its appeal.

My knock on it right now it's a bit too effervescent if that makes sense at all. While a good beer, so it blue moon.
