I just did my pic as an example. Are you using a AC unit or a fridge compressor?Dan

I want to be able to plug this thing in. What's funny is at some point I understood electrical concepts but I never figured out how anything real works :P

So you want a plug box that gets turned on and off with the controller. If you are going to do that then I would wire up both plugs, one from the cool and one from the heat. This way its done and if you ever need it you have it.I can draw it up if you want me to with everything correct.Dan

If you have a specific question let it fly. Most of the time I'm in your boat. I'm an electrical engineer but I know shitall about house wiring.

So its your fault. You are now my worst enemy. You EE types like to design stuff so compact you need to be a midget with small hands for a midget to fix anything. Avionics equipment is the worst. I now have a name to curse each day as I try to align our dual transmitters.Adds MtnBrewer to his list of people he would like to kill.Dan

Yukon Dewitt (aka Trub Lou aka manboob brewer) is also an EE, just to expand your repertoire

so here's a question...again referring to the guy on HBT: https://www.homebrew...r-build-163849/he has his hot and cold going to the same outlet box. he mentions breaking a tab - is the tab on the outlet and it ties the two sockets (maybe not right term??) together? I was thinking I might buy 2 sets of outlets (so 2 sockets for cooling, 2 sockets for heating). does this mean I can leave the tab untouched and run one set of wires to each and all will be correct? please let me know if I'm not making sense.

If you are going to use just one plug and use the top for cool and bottom for heat then yes you need to break the tab on the side of the plug betewen the top and bottom. If you are going to wire up two plugs then leave the tabs alone.Posted ImageDan

is it also fewer wires to each "outlet assembly" versus the HBT guy? I would assume you only need one set if you leave the tab connected right?

Ok on this pic you posted the blue is the neutral, the black is the hot and the green is the ground. You only break the tab on the hot side of the socket.Posted Image

Now some people say you should run the neutral to the controller and back but if you keep everything nice and covered up, or in project/plug boxes then I see no problem with running the hot. When checking which is hot/neutral get a multimeter and put the ground in the ground hole of the plug and the red lead in the right slot. It should be the hot one 115vac and the left (larger) slot should be 0 VAC.
