Witcher is denser in terms of map population, but more scripted. You can't kill any NPC you want. Lots of cut scenes for dialogue.

I just started it on pc. The mechanics seem clunky. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

The amount of cut scene dialogue makes the game play slow.  It's a bit annoying IMO.  I haven't played much of this type of game before so I don't know what "normal" is.  I played through Breath of the Wild in 2018-2019 and AC Valhalla last year, Witcher has a much slower pace than either.  I think BOTW raised the bar for open world games and W3 came out before BOTW so it's not surprising.  The clunky mechanics and fighting is probably just the game showing its age.  If BOTW is a 10 in game/fighting mechanics, I'd give AC Valhalla an 8 and W3 a 5, at least from my relatively inexperienced view.

More like an homage.  The master blacksmith in Novigrad, Éibhear Hattori, is modeled after the master swordsmith in Kill Bill, Hattori Hanzo.  Both "retired" swordsmiths who sell dumplings in their retirement and the main character has to convince them to come out of retirement to make them a weapon(s).  Even the cut scene in Witcher mirrors the scene in Kill Bill when Beatrix Kiddo first meets Hanzo and he shows her his stash of never sold swords above his sushi bar but tells her she can't have them, he'll make her a special sword.  In W3, Hattori shows Geralt his weapon stash above his dumpling shop then sends him on a quest to get materials for "special" weapons.

Apparently, Hattori Hanzo from Kill Bill was named after a famous Japanese samurai warrior, as well.

  • His surname and role in the game are referencing Hattori Hanzō, the famous samurai in Sengoku era of Japan, as well as a former master swordsmith and sushi bar owner in the film Kill Bill Vol. 1.

lol, i do remember that. Didn't know it was from kill bill.

Is there any reason you have to play Gwent to finish the game? I’ve accidentally played a few times and my eyes glaze over immediately when the tutorial starts going over the rules. I have less than zero interest in playing.

I'm with you on that one.

It's to prevent the weak from button mashing their way to the end. Gwent is life.

I guess the creators are Tarantino fans, first the Kill Bill reference now they invoked “Zed’s dead”.

After playing this quite a bit, I will say the story is much better than AC:Valhalla but ACV has better game design.  Just felt like the game moved more quickly and the challenges were more engaging, although the overall game had about the same amount of content.  ACV is way better in gameplay but it's a much newer game so I can't complain too much there.  ACV is the only comparable game I've played so that's all I have.
