Figured I would start a new thread for the new year.

I did my first batch on my modified system yesterday, a APA with Columbus and Galaxy.  All in all it went well.  The new Auber EZ Boil controller was amazing.  I set up a rather extensive mash schedule and it stepped right through it holding for the appropriate time and moved to the next temperature as expected.  At the end it held at 170 till I removed the bag and hit "run" again.  Nice to be able to run a step mash hands off.

Additionally the Easy Dens worked great and was perfect for taking readings during the brew day.  I have been playing with that some on commercial beer and I find that when I expected a beer to be in the 1.014-16 range it was 1.010 and beers I assumed were 1.010 were around 1.005.

I am hoping to get a pilsner or helles going this week also.

So, who is brewing?

No brewing scheduled yet. But I need to go read up on this EZ boil controller. I knew Auber had some new stuff but never really looked into it.

For under $80 it is a great piece of equipment.

I will check it out. I might just swap out my current MLT PID with it.

Just kegged my first batch of 2021 yesterday. I may re-transfer it after it settles a bit though. Pretty cloudy still.

you sound like a good candidate for the floating dip tube.

usually I don't seem to transfer enough stuff into the keg to need a second transfer to get the beer clear.  typically it's pretty clear within a few weeks.  during this period I still drink some of it and enjoy the change I see it going through.

Just took a reading and already at 1.020. The S-04 is chewing through it.

I need to actually drink some beer so I have an excuse to brew again. I've probably had 5 beers in the last week. No way to be.

Got a big starter of Bayern going for a red lager tomorrow. Going to experiment with a large (3#) addition of carapils copper.

I don't really expect it to be. I did a amber ale before with 20% and it was good. I also will be using an enzyme that should get me an FG about 1.007. Time will tell.

You say it like full body is a bad thing!

Have you used this enzyme before? I've never really considered using one

I like full body but that is not what I have in mind for this one. Picture a red pilsner.

I have not used it but have been paying attention to many that have with good results. I figure why not...

what's the thought of using carapils if not for body?  I just mean versus using anything else.  I know the carapils copper has some flavor contribution but not as much as a light crystal or something like that.

I'm not questioning the decision - just curious on what the goal is.  I don't want to be behind the curve on the next big thing!

My goal is to get the red color with out adding in a bunch of various crystal malts and the flavors they bring or blending in more base malt.  I saw this over at the Briess site and it got me thinking http://blog.brewingw...d-vienna-lager/

I think it will have some body to it.  I should have stated before that it will be dry because of the FG.  I think FG and body do not follow each other perfectly.

I also think the CP  Copper bring something to the flavor that you can not get from other crystals.  I have remember it in my past beers like this.

Who knows. it could be a dumper when things are all said and done  :D .

Happy how this brew day went.  Had a nice increase in efficiency to 75%.  It may not be great but it is a 5% increase for me.

Color is about what I expected.

did you change something about your process for the increase in efficiency?
