I've found it kind of fascinating to watch... I also realized that I didn't calibrate before I started. I did calibrate the app on my phone, so it's reading the gravity as 1.012, but shows as 1.015 on the spreadsheet.

 

To you lager experts, I'm wondering or maybe really looking for affirmation, is it time to bring it into the house and start to warm it up for a diacetyl rest?

I think you could bring it to a warmer spot.  Anyone doing the quick lager method could bring it to a warmer spot anytime the beer was in the 'second half' of it's fermentation (4-5 days, usually).

edit: I just brought it in, so I'll let it sit for a couple of days or so, then rack to secondary and let it sit in the <40 ºF garage. Thanks!

I made a lager with Diamond yeast last weekend and it sat in the 50-52° fridge until this past Friday (so ~6 days).  In preparation for the pale ale I made yesterday, I turned the temp on the fridge up to about 62° and took the lager out and left it next to the fridge.  The spot where it rests is actually between my fermentation fridge and one of my draft fridges so it's slightly warm in that spot.  It has happened where I have gotten a bit of diacetyl if I don't leave the lager in a warmer spot.  In fact, the first batch of lager made with this Diamond yeast was not brought up to a warm enough temp and the beer had a good amount of diacetyl.  I left that keg near the furnace for about 3-4 days and then tried it again... no diacetyl.  I have been brewing like crazy lately so it's been a lager one week followed by an ale the next.  After one week the fermenting beer (ale or lager) is taken out of the fridge to warm up and finish up, have the yeast drop a bit and then it's closed-transferred to a keg 5-6 days later in prep for the next batch.  Good luck.

I love my Tilts.   They make hitting the spund a piece of cake.   Additionally, having that constant data available has helped me improve my lager fermentation.  If my beer's not dropping 6-8 pts/day, I messed something up.

Looks like I'm going to build some iSpindles. Started ordering parts... I should be able to build 5 for less than the price of 1 Tilt. Question is... Can I get them to work?

Looks like I'm going to build some iSpindles. Started ordering parts... I should be able to build 5 for less than the price of 1 Tilt. Question is... Can I get them to work?

I looked real quick at them.  I assume they are very similar to the tilt?  I would love to save the money but sadly these days I have barley enough time to brew and less to build stuff.  I think in the end I will be getting one more tilt since I would like to be able to track 2 beers at once.

I really like some of the features he's built into this board: A special area to attach weights, adjustable battery position, bumps that you file down to create a custom fit in each tube, a good-sized label area, holes to make board removal easy, etc.

 

It looks like 5 complete iSpindels will run under $200 (with some parts to spare...) I could have spent a little less, but I went with US sellers where I could to avoid long shipping waits.

 

I'll probably adapt one of my RasPi's to log data.

I think there is a repeater you can get to boost the signal

I looked at that but did not like the price.  I am going to play around and move the tablet I am using closer to it to see if that helps any.
