Just ignore that they aren't there -the game will be fine. If you want to come up with some in-game narrative why they aren't, even better. There is no need to over complicate it.
Usually if there is a way to overcomplicate it, I will

Haha, nah man, don't worry. Anything can be worked around with narrative. The important thing is getting the game fundamentals rules down so that when players interact with the world everything is consistent and fair.
The main areas:
How combat works
What are skill/difficulty challenges and when are they applicable.
And for the players:
What setting are we playing in and what are the restrictions? Is there alignment or class/race restrictions? Is this a campaign or a scenario? This information will be needed to create and flesh out our characters. I'm assuming all characters are starting with their class generated wealth and all gear will need purchased from that pool.
I would highly recommend that new players stay away from the casting classes in the first game. The spell mechanics add another layer of rules and nuance that will need to be learned. It's a lot to take in.

And if I may suggest if choosing the game is still open: Lost Mine of Phandelver. This is from the D&D Starter Set and is designed for both new DM's and Players. It's also well regarded.

I am not a new player, but have not played (other than with my kids) in 20 years. I did play regularly then. I was thinking about switching to a druid, as we already have a barbarian. Not sure we need two bashers in the group. I have seen a couple of gameplay videos from the Lost Mine of Phandelver. I would not be opposed to that. I am definitely itching to play. After last night's failed attempt, I actually watched a live gameplay video on twitch.

This is the module, amongst others, that I have. I started everybody...myself included as it was recommended to me by the FG guys as the quintessential starter set. I had bought another one first initially, but the guy that took my order wanted to refund my money to buy LMOP, which was very helpful and generous of them. It has a plethora of side quests and avenues to expand if one wanted. But just that one game module is sufficient to play and adventure for quite a while. It is what we started boot camp with.

Anyways, I think...maybe I'm jumping the gun but, our next gathering should be out of boot camp and embark on a real adventure. We do have things to learn along the way, but if you are anything like me, I learn better by doing and under pressure. LOL So maybe if everyone has their character and ancillary equipment in order, we can proceed next gathering.

Busco, man I feel bad we didn't get you set up. I think we threw the kitchen sink at it tho. At any rate, I know you are out for the price of the headset but I do have a spare mice here in the lab you are welcomed to. It's not a headset but it's a desk tripod set stand alone mic with a windscreen. It's not the most fabulous, but it would get you going.
LMK and it's yours.
I'm sure we'll figure it out...thanks though!
