Hadn't bought US-05 in a while and stopped at a new-to-me LHBS. $4 for a pack! I thought I was getting really ripped off until I saw the prices in the NB catalogue. It's still cheap in the scheme of things, but what's the deal?

The price went up because I started using them more. This is strictly Murphy's law working here. Midwest is at $2.75 / pack, went up $.75, dosnt sound like much, but that is a 26% increase, your point is quite valid!

This is a thought and I don't know any specifics about a reason why but: If technology and dry yeast keeps seeing an improvement I would think that might allow for an increase in prices. Plus Liquid yeast is around $6 so they probably figure with possible increase in manufacturing costs that a product price increase would be in line. Just my thoughts though.

Uhhh, inflation? Compacted with the fact that you weren't used to the prices at the "New-to-me LHBS"

Danstar seems unaffected, but I too noticed that Safale is now up over 50% in price from a few months back. My guess is that they figured they could charge more (based on the liquid prices) so they have.

Any given product is "worth" what people will pay for it. If they charge $4 and you paid for it, then it's worth $4.

Yep, supply and demand. But while a certain number of people will be willing to pay $4 for a pack of dry yeast, there will be another number of people who will decide that price is too steep. Those people may start re-pitching dry yeast, or may decide to turn to liquid yeast and start re-pitching it to save money. At some point, the increased revenue from the price increase will be offset by the lost sales. At $4 a pop, I'm nearing the point where I will probably purchase fewer packs of US-05, and start stretching my liquid cultures a further number of generations.

Yeah, might be time to go back to liquid and stretch it out! 3-4 brews in a row, repitching. At 10 gal batches, it'll stock me up good. :)

I saw the same thing at my LHBS last week - Safale prices went through the roof! The S23 - Lager price was almost $5! Guess it really is supply & demand.-Dick

Yea, I havn't even noticed an increase in price because I haven't been buying dry yeast. I always keep 05 and 04 on hand, but lately I have been repitching and experimenting with different liquid strains. It sucks that the dry stuff is getting up in price with the liquid, but that might mean I'll just have to stop buying Dry.

+1 on using more liquid. I have been using us-05 as my house yeast namely because i have no clue when i will brew or what i will brew so its quick, easy, and dependable...but if my lhbs hits me up for 4 a pack i will definitely make time to do a starter and reuse liquid strains again and again.

Remember the saying, "I never bother to re-use dry yeast 'cause it's so cheap"?Welcome to the new economy.I always used to keep a pack or three around in case I flubbed the starter, or I decided to do a partigyle on the spur of the moment on a brewday.

One of my favorite dry yeasts, Nottingham, is still $1.60 a pouch at B3.

I just bought 4 packs of S05 at my LHBS for $1.95/per. Guess they haven't gotten the news yet.

The S23 - Lager price was almost $5!

Good....maybe that will discourage people from buying it! :)

I'm so cheap that I re-use dry yeast.
