That puts me in the mood to brew some beer. I can smell those hops just by watching.I'm guessing that to get a good boil on that volume of wort, using your kitchen stove, you had to span two burners with the kettle and run both burners?

Haha, nice. Yeah it's two burners (front & back), but that works even with double the volume you see in the video. That video is pretty old, and is of my 7.5 gallon kettle. I also do 10 gallon batches of finished beer (like 12+ boiling in a 15 gallon kettle). It does take some time to reach temps, especially since I always make sure to pull pure cold water out of the tap. Most of my mashes end up being greater than 60 minutes not because of any mashing program I want to do but rather I'm still waiting for my sparge water to reach temp. Really though, it's not all that bad and I usually finish up a brew day in 8 hours give or take my laziness.

Thanks man. A week from Sunday, and classes start the 14th. I basically finished all the required reading. I probably won't finish Kunze before classes start, but I'm trying to get through the sections that pertain to the first module. I've just been taking the brewing texts everywhere with me to read any time I have a spare 5 minutes. I felt a little bit like a cheeseball sitting at the bar in Gingerman and reading some German beer textbook, but at least I wasn't posing, I really do need to read it. I had Goose Island Kölsch for the first time and now I can't wait to be studying right next door, that might be my favorite domestic example of the style.

Nice Video Chuck. I am impressed that you got that nice of a boil going on the stove top. Reminds me of moving into this house and trying to brew on my ceramic stove top. I couldn't get 4 gallons of water to boil in an hour when I was brewing extract back then (5 years ago). Thats when I switched to the propane burner and the rest is history. Oh yes good luck at Siebel. Look forward to hearing how it goes and all you learn. Congrats and good luck!!Mike

Thanks. This stove is probably the best stove I've ever had for brewing (all I've ever done is stove-top, but I've used at least 8 different stoves). The fact that it was able to boil 6+ gallons like that without any partial covering of the lid is what made me think the upgrade to 10 gallon batches would be successful. There's like a crescent moon shape of caramelized glue where the kettle overlaps the counter top. Ah, rentals.

No doubt, classes start the 14th, and then we're there for 7 weeks. I'm not certain what the schedule looks like exactly. I know it's classes M-F 9-5 with a 45 minute lunch break. Then I think having a few beers after class at the bar downstairs or at GI is pretty common. There are randomly scheduled field trips, which are mandatory during the week, but optional on Saturdays. Once I have a better grasp of the scheduling I'll give a shout out to the ChiTowners.
