Getting ready to brew next weekend. Formulating the recipe in BrewSmith. I have both Whirfloc and Irish Moss on hand. Is it redundant to use both? I've only recently acquired the Whirfloc tablets, but also have Irish Moss.

redundant, too much can cause good stuff to be lost
use up your IM first, remember to hydrate first, also when you do use Whirlfloc it's 1/2 a tablet at no more than 10 minutes in the boil 7 is better.

I'm with Ken. I got on a whirlfloc bulk buy and got pretty much a lifetime supply for less than $20. Easy to use. I use 1 tab per 5g.
you are both using too much

Says who? My beer or the manufacturer? I'm not about to take the time to cut the tabs when it works perfectly fine using whole tabs.you are both using too much

My pro brewer buddy say to add it between 20 and 15 to let it do it's thing. Why 7?

I read some time ago a statement by the manufacturer that it is intended for no more than 10 minutes in the boil, and that the recommended dosage is 2 tabs of 20g per 100 Liters, 1/2 a tab is close enough.
Apparently anything over 10 minutes causes degradation of the carrageenan.

I'm not why this would be an issue. Once the proteins have clumped and dropped, it has done it's job.

That's something I don't recall. Excellent benefit then.

+1 for the 1 tablet per 5-gal batch at 10ish minutes

I used to do 5 minutes and then someone said 10 and then someone else said the kill zone seemed to be 7 so that's what I did. It definitely works because I brewed a batch once last year with no Whirfloc and wow, big difference. Also, trying to cut a tablet in half would probably leave you with 9 tiny clumps and some dust. It's kind of 'crumbly' so I can't see trying to cut it in half. Somewhere in there I also got SUPERMOSS which is a pain to prepare (okay, not really but it's not as easy as dropping a tablet in the brewpot) and it didn't work as well. Whirfloc is for me.
not too hard to cut in half

not too hard to cut in half
what we homebrewers need is a whirlfloc powder that can be measured out exactly based on volume vs gravity, that doesn't require elaborate preperation

I just snap them in 1/2 with my fingers. Sure it isn't exact, but it is easy to do. I throw it in a 5 mins.

huh
it seems there are several formulations of Whirlfloc on the pro brewer market, T which we use in tablet form, B which is a powder like Super Moss, and G which is a Granular form.
all three have differing pitching times and methods for preparation
