This just seems ridiculous. The whole "smartphone" angle offends my technical sensibilities.

It only does half of what it needs to do.  At the end of all that ardino and iphone controlled process, you still have to bottle or keg it.  And it doesn't seem to include a pump, either.

So if you can brew, you don't need it, but it's far from turnkey enough for people who can't brew to use.

yeah, at first I thought it would just be an automation package to help control brew day on a smart phone or tablet. Nope. It's an automated brewery. Do not need and way too expensive to buy as a beginner.

I would like to see how those stackable fermenting tanks work....

They look like deep full-sheet steam table pans to me.

Oooh, now there's a good feature. Will it also update my sig line with the status of each beer I have at various stages?

It's a novelty item for sure, and no, it won't be the cheapest way to get into brewing.  But iPhone people tend to have a lot more disposable income (ask anyone in mobile advertising who they target above anyone else by a 9:1 ratio).  That's obviously who they're going after here.

I hope it posts random questions about when it's best to add the dirty diaper.

Possibly, though if it makes beer using the same ingredients that you'd use when making it yourself, rather than a "pre-hopped syrup" or whatever MB uses, is the automation a bad thing?  Put another way, if someone comes up with a fully automated push-button HERMS system, is *that* just a geek's Mister Beer?

Yup. I really don't understand what the functional difference between this and a Sabco are other than the app angle. The BrewMagic can be programmed for step changes, no?

And this has me confused:

Brewbot is flexible and allows you to brew using no-sparge and batch sparging techniques which means it recirculates the water over the grain bed and cuts the brew time.

I haven't brewed in quite a while, but I don't remember any recirculation going on when I batch sparged

More money gets you a better system that can handle better ingredients.  Many people routinely spend a couple grand per person on Christmas presents, so I can see someone who's into beer and who's family has that kind of cash getting one of these as an introduction to the hobby.
