Two brew weekends, two hydrometers

You should have saved your $$ and spent teh $30 on a refractometer at Austin Homebrew (one of this week's specials).

I already have one, but it is in Brix and I don't like it.

It seems like I can never get the light bright enough to get a clear reading.

make sure your sample is fully covering the prism and the cover is squashed down tight

This. Have you tried it with plain water? You might just be way outta calibration. Also try to remove as many air bubbles as you can from under the slip cover. Tapping on it helps.

I used distilled water to calibrate it and a flashlight. It is accurate, just a pain in the ass to use.

Never had that problem (with any of the 3 refrax I have owned :stabby:). I just point mine towards a light source and it's easy to read. Yours must be dimmer for some reason.

my $20 ebay refracto is perfectly clear, I dunno what is wrong with BBM, maybe he's a dim bulb

tell us how your really feel :Pjust make sure your sample is covering the prism and it's fully free of air bubble and you should be good
