I already have one, but it is in Brix and I don't like it.You should have saved your $$ and spent teh $30 on a refractometer at Austin Homebrew (one of this week's specials).

Two brew weekends, two hydrometers

make sure your sample is fully covering the prism and the cover is squashed down tightIt seems like I can never get the light bright enough to get a clear reading.

This. Have you tried it with plain water? You might just be way outta calibration. Also try to remove as many air bubbles as you can from under the slip cover. Tapping on it helps.make sure your sample is fully covering the prism and the cover is squashed down tight

I used distilled water to calibrate it and a flashlight. It is accurate, just a pain in the ass to use.This. Have you tried it with plain water? You might just be way outta calibration. Also try to remove as many air bubbles as you can from under the slip cover. Tapping on it helps.

my $20 ebay refracto is perfectly clear, I dunno what is wrong with BBM, maybe he's a dim bulbNever had that problem (with any of the 3 refrax I have owned
). I just point mine towards a light source and it's easy to read. Yours must be dimmer for some reason.
