I"m kind of a hybrid of sorts from what I"m reading. I like to hear other's takes on things, read in brewing books and texts etc., but then evaluate and try for myself. I spend a lot of time waxing on in my head about what makes certain beer so different and beautiful. It may not come across, but I spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking about the things that interest me, one of the biggest and most prevalent is beer. Through osmosis, Nellasid, my fiance, can hold a conversation with pro brewers, homebrewers, beer lovers etc and has serious chops, though she's generally been a brewers assistant. We've chatted frequently about the beer we've made, the beer we were trying to make etc., and it doesn't shame me at all to say she has a better palate than myself. before I get to wordy, the main thing is spending and investing the time thinking and really breaking apart processes and how they work. With that comes really productive T&E.

If you didn't do any reading, how would you have any idea how to brew beer at all. The beverage which we know and love has been thousands of years in development. I understand what you are getting at, we learn from our mistakes. However, the experience of those who have come and gone before us is what makes humanity as great as it is today. To eschew all of that seems foolish and wasteful.

Meh, ask questions, read books, take good notes and the beer will get better. There's enough ways to screw up during brewing that you don't need ignorance to help find them.Cheers,Rich

If you try t&e then you'll have to at least ask yourself questions when the outcome isn't what you wanted it to be. You can search out answers through reading, but soon enough you'll find that asking others trying to figure out the same thing as you is very helpful. It takes so long to find out if you made a big mistake(s) that knowing something ahead of time will at least help somewhat. You'll still be looking for answers for years! (because you'll always want it to be better)
