So, I'm one of those guys who like to go it alone so the education of the project sinks home. I once told a friend that the only two variables I need for a promect are "T" a "E"."Oh, you mean time and energy, right?","No, I mean trial and error"This is so where I am with brewing. I almost would rather screw up a batch and learn - really learn - what not to do than ask a question on the board or, for that matter, friends I know with much more brewing experience. I know this is conterproductive to the board, and very possibly, the beer I'll shortly be drinking, but it's where I'm at. I think ultimately it makes me a better brewer because the lessons learned are not forgotten. So, am I the only one, or are others as pig headed as I?

Initially I was, but after wasting time and money and getting subpar results, I reformed my ways.

This, being German/Irish didn't help me either.

I'll say this (actually I've said it many times): we learn more from our mistakes than our successes.

I don't disagree, but I look at it from a different angle. When I was a teen, I thought I had all the answers and did shit my own way despite the advice from my father. More often than not, it turned out badly for me. So now I seek out the knowledge of those far more experienced than I and make better beer because of it.

True, but screw up enough and you may just quit trying.Unless you are German/Irish and pigheaded.............. Basically I ignored advice until I realized there were a lot of proven answers already out there.

Were you wasting "T" and "M"...or what you did stick with you and you'll never do again?

Lets see... Time and money were big for me back then because I didn't have much of either. lol I didn't pay as much attention to cleanliness as I should, never made starters, fermented at less than optimal temps, didn't use irish moss or fining gelatins, scoffed at secondary fermentation, added fruit during primary, etc etc etc. I finally got serious when I joined the old greenboard. So pretty much almost everything I did as a young brewer, I wouldn't do now. Back then it was just the cool factor of making beer and I would have drunk rat piss if there was booze in it.

Maybe the best thing to do is learn from other people's mistakes. :D

Yes you learn a lot from T & E, but its the things you will never learn from it that you can learn from other people. I have learned so many things you never need to do but if you did will increase the quality of your beer.T & E are great but not everything.Dan

Not me! I've been bugging the heck out of these guys so I can learn stuff. I don't mind learning from my mistakes, but I'm also not so proud, so I ask lots of questions. I enjoy the camaraderie that I've found here.

Well, just maybe, one of the posters here will make a mistake someday........ and post :DAs in immersion chillers work really slow when you run hot water instead of cold through them. Although it will get you down past DMS levels....... :banghead:

I prefer to ask questions, assess the answers, then try things that seem correct. Then I assess whether or not that piece of info holds true for me. Trial and error alone will take you a long time to lewrn to make great beer.

Denny has probably forgotten more about brewing than we could hope to learn.

My beer would never be what it is today if I just went the T&E route. I frequent a number of boards but this one is my go to if I need an answer.Beach
