I have a bunch of those orange blow off tube caps. I don't like them. The don't seem to be made for any particular tubing size and they don't fit really well on better bottles. I like the stoppers and the air locks, but often my fermentation is so vigorous that they get blown off. Is there a through piece that fits in the stopper that has a nipple on it for the blow off tube? I would buy that. Cheers,Rich

all I ever use for blowoff is a 5 foot section of 1" I.D. not reinforced heavy wall vinyl clear tubing, snug fit in a glass carboy, never any worry of plugging.pic is not mine, but just like thisPosted Image

That would work for glass, but the better bottles have a bigger hole.

you'd think they would have made better bottles to the same standard :facepalm:what is the neck opening on one?

The only time I use a blow off tube is for wheat beers. I dunno why, but they're explosive lil suckers.

if you are making german wheats it's the yeast. otherwise - maybe the excess protein has something to do with it.

Sorry, waiting on a reply that has to do with Schwanz' recent thread regarding insolubles, or something like that. My reply had nothing good to contribute and didn't advance the conversation what so ever. All in all, fairly typical of my contributions to the forum.Beach

You can also try using fermcap or a similar product.Another option for some beers is to regulate the fermentation temperature to the lower range. For example, I ferment all my ales at 62F, lagers at 49F, and only for specialty yeasts will I go higher (belgians, or if I want a specific flavor profile that I can only get at a higher ferment temp).Other than that, do like others have said, measure the ID of the bottle, and find tubing with an appropriate OD that will fit snugly.

Sometimes I overfill the carboys which is why I get into trouble. Other than that there's nothing wrong with my fermentation. I just don't like the caps and would like to use something else.Cheers,Rich

couldn't you simply use a #11 drilled stopper with the blow off tube pushed into the drilled opening?

I like the carboy caps because I can seal the carboy with sani while I am brewing. The only problem I have keeping the hose on the cap when fermenting is if they cap and tubing are still wet with starsan.

The reason I like them is that I can shove a racking cane down the center, attach CO2 to the other "nozzle" and push my beer out instead of siphoning. If you need a blowoff, you can slip some tubing over the main nozzle but I haven't used a blowoff tube in years.

If using the 3 piece air lock that has that plastic thing that bounces up and down as the lock part, take that off, then get the appropriate sized tubing that goes over the post that the little bouncing thing sits on. That way you can still use the #10 bung with the airlock if using a better bottle. Norther Brewer also has a Better Bottle blowoff assembly too: https://www.northern...f-assembly.html

My blowoff tube assembly is the rubber bung, then the main part of the fermentation trap. Without the little cap or the lid on, you can jam your tube onto that. Don't remember what the inside diameter needed to be, but it was big enough. Seemed more reliable than jamming the tube down a drilled stopper, but frankly its the same thing.

the airlock assembly has a restrictor on the bottom that can clog, and should be busted out

To the OP, you could always buy an undrilled stopper that fits the BB and drill it to what size you want, no?
