Fortunately I've yet to find a bad one. There's definitely a lot of variability from year to year but that's different. With wild beers the only way to smooth out that variance is to blend several years together (like gueuze). Also I can give newer breweries a somewhat of a pass as the microflora get established in the brewery.

Asheville brew cred is getting up there. congrats to all of my old peeps. Last time I was there I spent three or 4 days and couldn't see and drink it all. I had to crawl out of there. Now add two national breweries to the list... it's a full scale beer destination, now.

An interesting thought was floated by a fellow beer geek who's opinions I respect after the announcement. Will two "800 lb gorillas" of craft beer landing in Asheville change the whole dynamic of the place? Will the really small craft guys that made Asheville such a neat place to visit (French broad, Green Man, Wedge etc..) get forgotten once those two move in? Didn't 100% agree with him, but it did make me think a bit about it..

All the quotes I've read from the existing breweries have been positive. They recognize they may lose some market share - although both brands are already available locally - but understand they may have to step their games up.

I don't think it will change it one bit. It might well make them stronger, IMO. Most all of them have their own personalities and are very cool to go to. It won't go away. Too many hippies, yo!

Sometimes in cases like this the local populace will become even more loyal to "their" breweries.

Man! First that I'm hearing about this. (....on Vacation). I heard there were rumors a few months ago but nothing confirmed. Awesome for my home state even if it is Asheville! Seems like Asheville is the new great beer destination with Madison, MI and Oregon. Now we can add NC to the bunch!

I think NOTHING will change. In fact it will solidify the craft beer movement in NC. While Sierra Nevada and New Belgium are craft brews, there are still not the "local" born breweries. You can not replace the small guys. If anything it will make them better brewers and they have an established local following. The local purists will still be loyal to their hometown brews.
