I brewed up an Oud Bruin today and in order to do all the rests and not boil until tomorrow I did a triple decoction mash. I doughed in at 122F then did a decoction to rest at 145F and 162F. Then mashed out at 169F and sparged with 176F water. My standard efficiency for my batch sparge rig is 75%. Well this time I hit 86%. I'm not complaining but I'm wondering, have others observed similar things when doing a triple decoction mash?
Triple decoction = higher efficiency or just a freak?

Yes, people typically get higher efficiencies when doing a decoction mash.

I have done a total of two triple-decoctions so not a lot of data, but my efficiencies were 69% and 74% respectively, so right in the range of what I normally experience. Maybe a little low for the first one, as I usually am in the low to mid 70s. I did find that the wort seemed highly fermentable as FG was lower than anticipated for both of these brews.
