The ESB has changed over to the much anticipated (well by our Head Chef Rob that I know of) WeizenBock. This beer is a hybrid of a Hefewiezen and a German Bock. We use 2 yeast strains (hefe and lager) and krausened with Maple Syrup during secondary. This beer has the nose of a hefe with the flavor of a dark German lager and just a lingering hint of the Maple syrup flavor. Defiantly was worth the wait to lager this beer correctly.

So I caught up with an old acquaintance of mine from college (Tyler) who is one of the brewers at Portsmouth Brewery. I got the full beer nerd tour since there were only 3 of us there so we could really turn the beer nerdiness up to 11 (awesome!).While there I got to try out their weizenbock and I have to say it's pretty incredible; spicy wyeast 3068 flavors up front and that bocky goodness on the way down. I don't know if this is the norm but they used a wheat and lager yeast strain in this. I should also mention it's got real maple syrup in it added towards the end of fermentation so some of this maple flavor actually makes it through. I really can't say enough good things about this beer.I also got to try out the new oatmeal stout cask beer that they have going. Pretty heavy on the hops (bravo) for what I am used to for a stout but really good all the same.I highly recommend people stop in here on their way through Portsmouth. If you can avoid peak hours I would though - it gets packed in there mighty quick. :)edit:Here is what Tyler has to say about it (from his blog):

Sounds nice to me. Great timing I am planning to brew the Weizenbock I put in the recipe swap in the next two weeks and use 3068. Wish I could say I have been to NH or will pass thru anytime soon. Hey Smuttynose just made it down this way recently and the beers of theirs I have tried were both great so I am sure if Portsmouth is the sister brewery it must be good too. Sounds like a sweet time and my kinda tour as well.

Lucky boy!As a West Coast guy who travels to the east coast on business, one of my SOP is to hunt down Smuttynose beer. They know how to make beer at that place.Shoals Pale Ale & Old Brown Dog are excellent beers. Hybrid Hefe?!?! I will check it out if/when I get a chance.zymot
