Anybody have a source for good growlers?I'd like some nice, reusable ones to use for my brew - I carried home brew to a picnic last weekend in Mason jars. :rolf: I want some a little sturdier than typical ones from a brewpub. My LHBS has some fantastic ones with a wide mouth, metal handle and a Grolsch-style top, but they're $50 each. :P I'd be willing to pay $20 for something nice, but $50 is a bag of grain.Any ideas?

A guy in my brewclub brings samples in a plastic orange juice container. Myself and others are fond of the 2 liter soda bottle and carb cap. I took homebrew to my daughter's wedding rehearsal dinner in 21 2-liter bottles.I have a number of standard screw top growlers from various brewpub and they work well fitting into cooler bags. Those tall flip-top growlers are nice, but they don't fit any of my small coolers.

When I first started brewing this is where I obtained my growlers. Ceramic tops, at least when I got them. The description doesn't say. $7.95 flat rate shipping.

One of our local beer stores will fill growlers like the ones I have linked below. I think they are about $6 IIRC for the growler itself and you just bring it back with you. I have 3-4 plus some of the fancy ones like shown above in the thread. My Link

I don't understand the problem with plain old brew pub growlers. They work fine for me. Sure, the swing top ones are nicer, but I don't find them all that much better.

It seems like the swing top ones seal up better. There have been a lot of times where I open up the twist off variety and I don't get any hiss which tells me they aren't very air tight. It's fine if you are going to consume the beer in a day or two but if there is a chance of long term storage (a couple weeks) I'd want the flip top variety.

might be the cap used, huh, if you are talking about the heavy duty 1/2 gallon brown jugs like I assume, then I can only agree. The ones I get at the LHBS are usable for bottle conditioning and always seal perfectly, they have the plastic lid with the truncated cone inside it.

Same here. I've had some caps that didn't seal, but swapping them out solved the problem.

I get clear 4L growlers for $8 on sale at the supermarket. Nice thing is that they come filled with Carlo Rossi Paisano  great for sangria. Swing top growlers are cool to look at, but... If I want my beer to present the best, I'd rather have it in a 2L soda bottle with a carbonator cap.

What about 2 liter PET bottles? I was at a brewery that used them, along with Pegas taps, instead of traditional growlers.Posted Image
