What's the difference between a pass and a swap? I participated in the beer pass at the other board, and basically it was of the type where each person gives to someone who they are not receiving from. I suggested this a while back, without much response. I would vote for this. Here's a community spirit builder lets share some beers. In the past we've done lotto (based off the lottery powerball) where everyone sends beer to the winner. However that tends to fall off as people get burned out from not winning. We could do a pass but I think shipping would get prohibitive to send a larger package around. So IMHO I think a swap would be the way to go. We could pick a deadline sign up date then I (or somebody else if they want to be in charge) can assign numbers to each person and start drawing to pair things up.Basic idea would be to pick a date a week or two for a name draw and then have a week or so to get packages out. If people like it we could make this a monthly/bi-monthly thing. Package idea would be 2 or more beers? Either home brew or a good micro if you don't have anything on hand. Feel free to throw "bonus" beers/cigars/swag, etc.Thoughts?

+1 I wasn't sure of the difference either. On the other board we called it a "pass". The idea was you send four homebrews to someone and someone else sends you four homebrews. You then give feedback on the brews...some were better at this than others. The idea was to get feedback on your homebrew. At some point the limit was raised from 2 two 4 beers, it almost didn't seem worthwhile to just send two.As I mentioned before, in another thread...if anyone decides to take the reigns on this...I have the spreadsheet that will determine the pairings. It ensures that the same pairings are not made in subsequent passes.I like the idea of a lotto, but with a contest involved...i.e. fantasy football, college pick-em, NCAA brackets, etc, where the winner gets a bunch of boxes and there are prizes for second, third, fourth, etc depending on the number of players. They do these on ratebeer where the box values are $20-30 min (people always throw in extras) and the winner gets an insane number of boxes, like 15-20. A winner will easily get $400-500 in beer. What's the difference between a pass and a swap? The type of "pass" I am thinking of is when you have a beer package going around and the receiver selects out a beer or two and then subs in their own beers to take place of then sends it on its way. This is more typical for cigars and such where shipping extras doesn't really matter. This would be hard with beers due to weight.Anyways its all schematics. The big question is do you want to get beers from the same person you sent them to or from others? On the numbers of beers that is totally up for discuss, I just through out 2min to get the talk started. I personally would be sending 4 based on the way I like to package things.+1 I wasn't sure of the difference either. On the other board we called it a "pass". The pass can be done virtually. Everyone say what they put in at first, then in a thread someone says "I take out x and put in y", then when a set time expires everyone ships the beer to the person that claimed it. The box doesnt have to physically be passed around. The type of "pass" I am thinking of is when you have a beer package going around and the receiver selects out a beer or two and then subs in their own beers to take place of then sends it on its way. Yeah that has some potential too but what if you are responsible for a few beers in the pass and then different people pick each? Then you have multiple packages to send. If its only 1 beer its not really worth the shipping...The pass can be done virtually. Yea but then your opinion of the beer may be influenced by the brewer's asshattery in the PH.I think you can rate/ give constructive criticism even if you know who's it is. I vote simplicity.

I think that we are all mature enough, or at least beer-centric enough, to separate asshattery from providing an honest evaluation of another brewers beer. I can say that while there are some on here who I strongly disagree with in their posts on the PH, I would have no problem swapping a beer with them and hearing what they thought of mine.Yea but then your opinion of the beer may be influenced by the brewer's asshattery in the PH.

Well stain's beer (if he were to get back into brewing) tastes like socialism!I think that we are all mature enough, or at least beer-centric enough, to separate asshattery from providing an honest evaluation of another brewers beer.
