I was thinking of making a BMC clone by using a great deal of stuff you'd find in any grocery store. Without moving this to the recipe thread, what would happen if I did something like take a box of rice crispies, a box of corn flakes (both of which would probably have to be ran through a food processor to not clog up my braid) and 3 lbs of two row lager malt and three lbs of 6 row.Would this work at all ya think?

I predict a stuck mash if you don't use rice hulls ... Otherwise I got nothing

I concur on the rice hulls. I also suspect it would end up pretty bleh.

The Garage Brewers in O'Fallon (STL suburb) did a cool iron brewer contest. You got handed the cereal to brew with blind - make something with it. Sounded like a really cool comp to me.

I think i would like to know your results.I have experimented some used shredded potatoes(whole i shredded myself)around 4 years ago, don't remember the results without consulting notes but do believe it was drinkable.Have used Whole corn(rinsed, ground up and added to the mash)some great, and the second one i used too much corn.My concern would be preservatives, i would try to buy cereals at perhaps an organic store if you can find one near you.

Wouldn't plain rice and/or corn grits be cheaper and less prone to potential problems related to preservatives, etc...? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the "spirit of homebrew" and "because I can" attitude, so if that's the reason that's cool. Just wondering what you are attempting to get from the processed cereals?

I say go for it. I'm betting you will make precisely what you're setting out to make -- an okay American light lager.

To get a higher OG you can use Frosted Flakes. :frank:

OK, I'm lost. Why would you want to do this?Other than playing troll on this board, which we all know you are not.You can't make it cheaper, and you can spend your time and effort making tasty beers.I'm "Corn-fused" ???

1) The challenge of it. 2) I imagine it would ferment out dryer and I'd be less fat and disgusting.

The only thing I can think is that mass market cereals probably have all sorts of coatings and stuff on them to keep them crunchy and from absorbing water from the air and clumping, etc. A lot of those additives could wreak havoc on your foam. Other than that, I don't see any reason not to try it.

I looked up the ingredients to both Rice Crispies and Corn Flakes... surprisingly not bad as far as preservatives go. However, they do fortify them with vitamins and minerals, mainly iron, which is not good for your yeast reproduction. Don't know how much iron a box would add, but pitching more yeast might be called for. Good luck.

This months BYO had a section on just this subject. Actually inspired me to start thinking about a batch for the fun of it. I'd say go for it!

I'm not sure that's going to help you much. You'd just be trading out calories from carbs for calories from alcohol. If you want light beer you have to start with a low starting gravity.
