Howdy all: I searched the forum and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I'll start a new thread. I recently got the "yeast culture" bug, and am wondering which four clones you would love to have on hand? I just innoculated my first batch, WLP001, California Ale from White Labs. For now I'm storing the strain(s) a la Papazian; beer bottles with air locks but in a dedicated fridge. I hope to advance to storage on slants, but don't yet have the equipment. In the meantime, what are your ideas and recommendations for general-purpose yeast that would be nice to have on hand?

Personally, I would go with Pacman, Kolsch, 2112, and some other English strain. These are just based on what I brew.I find that the hybrid yeasts are also excellent in other beers too!Pacman just cause you can't get it very often, and the English just cause it works for almost any English Ale, and it also works in a ton of American styles.

I have yet to even attempt my own yeast banking , and probably never willhoweverI think i could be content in virtually all my brewing with;WLP 001 or any of the Chico strain WLP 005 OR 002 toss up here, although in fact i could sub s-04 dry and be happy with itWLP 550 Versatile Belgian Yeast and available year around locallyWLP 830 the 34/70 strain, very versatile lager strainthere are far more strain out there of course but those four would get me through the majority of what I like to brew and consume and are readily available

It works really well for most American styles. I'll often use it in place of 1056 since I find 1007 to be a bit cleaner and drier.

Right now i have WLP001, 002, 830, 833 and 838 on slants. I've been buying whatever looks good on out of date vials on discount and slanting them. I think my long term goal is to keep about 6-8 on hand, something like 001, 002, 029, 565, 800, 830, 838.

I did your Rye IPA with WL 036 which is supposedly the same strain, turned out wonderful, after it finally cleared.

I like Denny's choices. I might sub a British strain (maybe 1028) for 1450 just based on what I brew most.
