So i got my score sheets back today for the comp I was just in. I am looking at my spice/herb/vegetable entry (pumpkin beer) I ended up with a 35 and third place. I guess I just over looked that I had to pick a style of beer this was other than a pumpkin beer...both judges wrote in the notes section that I would have been in the 40s if I would have given them a style. So here is the recipe i formulated....When I made it i thought pumpkin beer not lets make this type of beer then add spices and pumpkin....so for the future when I make this beer again and maybe enter it in a comp I would love to add a style this time and not get docked points...5 gallons6 lbs Rahr 2-row2 lbs Global Dark Munich1 lb Belgium Biscuit 1 lb Light Crystal 4 oz Special BMash everything around 154 for an hourBoil:.75 oz Perle 7 AA 60 min.25 oz Perle 30 minS-04 yeast (whitbread dry version)OG: 1.056 FG: 1.013What do you guys think....one of the judges wrote maybe a blonde ale but I have to think the color/flavor is a little off for a blonde.

Is it dark enough to be a Scottish ale?I think a pumpkin beer is good with a moderate gravity, malty ale with not much hops.

How do it taste like pumpkin? The hops? I don't know much about flavor for hops or Special B and I'm too lazy to look it up. :rolf: Cheers,Rich

usually the pumpkin flavor is actually just pumpkin pie spice mixtures which most people associate with pumpkin. Some people also add in pumpkin pie filling (from the can). I don't think there are any hops that taste like pumpkin. Special B tastes like dark crystal with some flavors that I can only describe as slightly raisin-like mixed in.

Exactly, this recipe and how I added the pumpkin actually did come through in the beer. I was pretty happy with the result because I tried a different way to do it than I had read or done before. I guess if I submit this to a comp again I'll have to write down a style so they can judge of of that....I will probably use blonde or Bitter as the style, one of the judges said "maybe blonde?" on the notes, i just dont see it.
