So I go to get my c02 tank refilled and they tell me first of all that the gas is $5/lb. Now that is outrageous (I think...) Then they have the audacity to tell me that I need a rebuild kit (o-rings etc) and that they do this every time a tank is refilled. Say what?!? The tank is only a year old. I have used this place multiple times previously (gas was $2-3/lb still a little high, but whatever..) and they didn't charge or mention or indicate at any time would there be a need for this "rebuild" business. I understand that a tank every 5 yrs or so has to get hydrotested but this is not that... Are there new policies and regulations about this I am not aware of. Needless to say I am highly irritated right now, but I guess that I will just take my business elsewhere if that is not the case... Thanks guys.

I just had a tank refilled a couple of weeks ago and it was no problem. I'd try a diff place.

I've got 3 tanks, refilled them many times, had them long enough to need to get them hydrotested, and I've never had any shop be it a place that specializes in fire extinguishers to welding shops tell me I need to get a tank rebuilt. I'm not an expert on CO2 tanks so I'm taking what the people at those places tell me at face value but it sounds to me like you might want to take your business elsewhere.

I avoid this by just doing the swap method at my local welding place. $5/lb is crazy $2-3/lb is more in line.

may place it's a fairly flat fee up to 55lbs. I don't think the CO2 costs much - it's the overhead that they charge you for.

What the hell is a rebuild kit anyway? Were they claiming that they rebuild the tank valve every time they fill a tank? If so, that's BS. $5/lb is pretty steep, but not crazy. The place I get my gas charges ~$4/lb for a 5# refill, but only ~$1.50/lb for a 20# refill and ~$1/lb for a 50# refill.

So there is a general consensus of a rape job here. That's what I was thinking. I was shocked to hear that and they say they have to do a rebuild each time they fill. I knew they were liars. Which is a shame because they are the closest place to me and WERE nice and fair there, but this is unacceptable. The thing about it is I bet they don't change a damn thing in that tank and just take my $12.....

They MIGHT have been talking about the nylon washer that goes between the valve and reg if you don't have a built in washer on the regulator, but those are thirty cents, not twelve bux.

Did you ask them what exactly they were doing for that $12?

I really think it is a matter of where you are in the country, I have heard of people paying dirt cheap prices like that, my place charges 16-20 I think for a 5#er, but only 22 or so for a 20#er. It has been almost a year though since I have been there.
