what's your method and what's the duration per 5 gallons? I'm looking at how I'm oxygenating and if I can improve on my current methods and wanted to see what others are doing as a benchmark.C

I use a scintered stone and pure O2 from one of those too expensive little cans at the hardware stores. I only use O2 on beers over 1.055, and then between 1 and 2 minutes per 5 gal, depending on a lot of factors (OG, yeast type, beer type, fresh yeast or cake...).

I shake maybe a little....Mostly my kettle drains into my better bottle through a screen from about 2 feet.

Where do you all get your oxygen tanks from? I've heard people say home despot, but I've never seen them there.

I couldnt find them there either, then one day I walked by them in a different area then the rest of the tanks. I believe it is in the plumbing section. I bought 2 bottles when I saw them, and that was about 20 batches ago.

I use the mix-stir attached to a drill. I let it foam up real good for about 5 minutes. I find this a lot safer and more effective than shaking the carboy.

HD here too is a little slack in stocking the O2. Try smaller hardware stores or plumbing/welding stores.

I thinking about going with a big tank too with the price of those little tanks. 15 lb should last you a lifetime...

Never used and never had an oxygen tank or stone. I shake the carboy for a few minutes and get the wort really foamy right before I pitch my yeast. I have done that method for 12 years and its worked well the whole time. I hear Lowes has the 02 tanks as well. Good Luck.

Technically, I don't oxygenate. I aerate with a MixStir.

I have a 20CF industrial oxygen tank with a welding regulator to a 2 micron stainless stone. for a 5 gallon batch of medium gravity, about a minute, for big beers, maybe 2 minutes.

I use a SS stirrer on a cordless drill too. It works well at my place. IIRC dagomike had some great numbers with aerating that way with O2 - no stone.

I put the starter in the fermenter and then pour the wort on top. No problems with that yet.

functionally the way I was doing it before pure O2 (shaking the hell out of the fermenter) worked pretty well. It also was brutal on my back at the end of the brewday.
