I'm sure they're thin but I've been using a thin alum. turkey friar pot for years with no problems.https://www.target.com/IMUSA-32-qt-Aluminum-Tamale-Steamer/dp/B001ARYXNW/ref=br_1_10/176-3560440-7988838?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=13002771&node=13002771&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=IMUSA%2032-qt%20Aluminum%20Tamale%20Steamerhttps://www.target.com/IMUSA-Nested-Tamale-5-pc-Steamer/dp/B00164U4FU/ref=br_1_21/176-3560440-7988838?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=13002771&node=13002771&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=IMUSA%20Nested%20Tamale%205-pc%20Steamer

An 8 gallon pot for $19? That would definitely work in a pinch. I don't buy into the aluminum/alzheimers theory, so I'd do it until a better option came along. An 8 gallon pot would have to be watched closely for boilovers and definitely use a polymer based foam control once a boil started... trust me, I've got a 15 gallon Sanke and I had almost 8 gallons in it this last time and the foam came very close to boiling over. Fortunately, I had my foam control ready to go.These would make great HLT's though. I use my 5 gallon turkey fryer for my hot water needs.

DOH, I've been using the aluminum pot that came with my bayou classic. The problem is that it was supposed to be 30 qts and was a couple short of that. I wanted something that could contain up to 7-1/2 gallons of boiling wort. I just bought an $80 cheap stainless stock pot that was advertised as 9 gallons and actually holds that amount. I could have probably gone with the 40qt aluminum one and been happier.I just couldn't justify getting a fancy thick walled boil pots for over $200 right now.

That tamale steamer looks interesting. It would seem that you might be able to get something like a standard lid that fit down inside it, drill a LOT of tiny holes in it and have a cheap false bottom for the pot.

I usually have 7+ gallons to start with in a 10 gallon pot and I haven't boiled over yet (no foam control, *furiously knocks on wood*).

It's worth the $2 or so for the foam control to NOT have to clean up after a boil over. Ask me how I know?

With one of those larger pots and the perforated bottom you could make a spiffy mashtun. Turn the perforated bottom into a false bottom. Wrap it up with some insulation and you could do some direct heat mashes.zymot
