My 13 year old played the Battletech board game with friends this week and loved it. He wants to buy it to play at home but we'd mostly play with two and sometimes three players. Is it fun for such a small number?

It's great at 2.  You can play with the main ruleset, or the simplified version (called "Alpha Strike"). It is a very crunchy war game, but I've loved it since the early 90s.
