so this part from bargain fittings... is this normal?  note the crud inside the part as well as the "burr" I circled in the second pic.

The burr is a casting issue.  I think that could happen from any vendor.  The crap inside ... I do not like that.  I would try to soak it for a while in some PBW and see what happens.

would the burr tend to corrode or cause any issues when brewing?  

 

regarding the stuff inside it does seem like maybe it will come off. I thought it was chemically attached to the part or something initially but it seems like it kind of scrapes off so I'm soaking the part in oxiclean and then I'll try to scrub it out a little bit.

I wouldn't accept it. Send pictures to the vendor, ask them what your choices for remedy are. If they are smart, they will send you replacements.

I contacted them but probably won't hear back until tomorrow.

I also took apart the fitting for the pickup tube which looked good but the pieces fell on the counter so now I need to figure out how they go back together

Fortunately I have one off these on my other kettle so I can carefully take it apart and confirm I did it right.

I would sue a die grinder with a good carbide burr on the end.  I think a dremel would do the trick.  Looking at picture #2, even the outside casting is rough.

I think that actually looks a lot worse than it is.  I had a flashlight shining into the end but some of the light was hitting that outside part at a high angle which would really enhance the shadows.  maybe the tensor chip in my new pixel phone did some enhancement there as well

The problem with stainless on stainless fittings is galling. When assembling be sure to use a proper seal/lubricant for SS applications. Lube is available in food grade

these parts won't be super snug.  since they will be internal to the kettle they can leak.  at least this is how it is on my other kettle.  the 90 degree elbow can freely flip over b/c it's not even tight.
