I was thinking about this yesterday.  I still add some "stuff" to my beer.  By "stuff" I mean:

  • campden tablet to water to make sure chlorine is gone
  • brewtan-b to mash, sparge and boil
  • yeast nutrient (wyeast) to boil
  • whirlfloc to boil

I sometimes wonder how necessary this stuff really is now and if I could start leaving some of it out.  I especially wonder because ritebrew is out of whirlfloc and my typical yeast nutrient :P

Nothing other than appropriate brewing salts.

I usually use RO water but on the rare occasion I don't, I use campden tablets. Whirlfloc and yeast nutrient get used pretty much every brew. Btw, Ritebrew has been out of Wyeast yeast nutrient for months now. They have the lowest price but never have it.

oh yeah, I add gypsum, CaCl and sometimes lactic.  rarely I add baking soda for a very high gravity dark beer where I actually need to counteract my CaCl additions (trying to get some mineral content in there).

CaCl2, gypsum to the mash and boil, occasionally baking soda to the mash

Brewtan B to the mash

Lactic acid to the sparge water and sometimes mash depending on the beer

Whirlfloc to the boil

Yeast nutrient and foam control to the yeast starter

O2 to the wort before pitching

no brewtan-b in the boil for you?

do you only use yeast nutrient in your starters but not your main batch of beer?

I started out putting it in both the mash and the boil. Lately I've just been doing the mash and haven't noticed any difference.

Correct I only use the yeast nutrient in the starter unless it's a pretty big beer (> 1.075 or so).

I didn't mention the stuff added to build my water - the usual suspects there. I've never used BtB, I probably won't bother.

It seems like Ritebrew never has the Wyeast yeast nutrient in stock. I just ordered a 5 pack ($17.31) from Amazon. I should be set for a while.

I could be wrong here (check my track record  ) but most of that yeast nutrient is yeast hulls. So I just (for my 13 gal batch) pitch in a heaping tablespoon full of bread yeast. I bought a half kilo brick at Costco for, of all things. baking bread. And a tablet of whirlfloc at the end of boil.

Now down here in TN, I'm going to be using campden for the mash water as they put bleach into the water. Balmer used to be only chlorine gas. Still waiting to get my brewery up and running.

I've heard this but I haven't confirmed it yet. I figure the nutrient is a pretty cheap investment per batch.

IronKite freaked out a bit when he saw me pitching bread yeast into the boil. My response:

I'm killing it, I just want their dead bodies.

Seems unlikely that it will cause a problem. More of a question of if it will have all of the same benefits.
