Even since I switched to a new SS mash tun with a false bottom a couple of years back I've never achieved great filtration like I used to with the SS braided hose filter on my cooler mash tun.  So today I took a small nylon steeping/hop bag and cinched/tied it to the end of the hose in the kettle.  I've collected quite a but of crud in there so I'll be keeping that out of the boil this time.  I'm not sure if I'll notice the difference but I figured why not?

I def feel like my beers have a lot of grain type flavor to them which could be good or bad.  I'm not sure.  I'm hoping this will make the beer seem "cleaner" but we'll see.

so in the end probably 1/2-3/4 of a cup of fine particulate was captured.  the wort also looks to be pretty free of the stuff I used to be able to see floating around.

granted this amount is slightly high b/c I didn't bother to doing any setting up of the grain bed but honestly that never did a whole lot anyway.  so I've replaced the setting up of the grain bed with rinsing out the nylon bag.  seems like an even trade in terms of effort.

Interested to see what the final results are like. Definitely since switching to what is basically the large colander of the Anvil system, my beers going into primary are less clear due to not having the finer filtration of the hose braid. The results are good and clear up in the keg, though.

the wort definitely looked clearer.  usually while using my IC to chill I occasionally swirl it around in the wort and the wort goes form pretty clear looking to fully on cloudy.  none of that today.

my experience is that amount won't matter at all

I didn't think it mattered either but I figured since it was easy why not? The amount of grain stuff that made it into the kettle def went up when I switched to this mash tun. The ss toilet braid is apparently hard to beat ;)

yes, it is! My philosophy is if it doesn't matter, why bother? Alos, like you, if it's easy why not?  Got both sides covered that way!

I just wanted to get away from plastic on the hot side of my system as much as possible just b/c I wonder what might come out of that plastic at high temperatures and lower pH levels.  maybe it doesn't matter but that's why I went away from the cooler and bought a SS mash tun.  unfortunately the mash tun needed a pickup tube of some kind and the tube needed to be down low.  I suppose I could get something that heads down into the bottom edge like I have on my kettle and put the SS braid on that but this new system with the small nylon bag seems okay for now.  it may not matter either way though :P

If it's HDPE, absolutely nothing will be coming out.

I would say if you do a good vorlauf whatever else flows through is fine. It will settle out and you rack off it anyway

Rack off at what phase? That stuff would probably make it into my primary just sure to the way my setup is.

So the Porter is done. It tastes good but this beer has such a pronounced roast flavor in not sure this is a great candidate for evaluation. I do like this verdant IPA yeast though.

You rack out of the kettle, no?

I drain from the bottom so a lot of stuff gets into the primary.

So this beer is super tasty. If it's due to avoiding extra grain I can't be sure.

my system on this failed today b/c there was too much stuff and it clogged up the bag.  so then I had to remove it and some dumped out.  still less stuff than I normally get but not particularly well filtered either.  I'm kind of thinking I might try the big paint strainer bag next time just for fun.

pretty soon I'll just be doing BIAB at this rate :P

so given my challenge last time with the smaller nylon mesh bag on the end of the hose today I put a paint strainer bag in my mesh SS hop tube thing and I'll filter all of the mash runnings through that.

the 5 gal nylon bag is a little too small to fit around the whole top of my 15 gal kettle.  pretty soon I'll just be doing BIAB :P
