Been hoarding my reward dollars from Discover, and with the recent work we've had done at our house (new flooring starts tomorrow), I should be able to pull the trigger in a couple of weeks.

Been giving a very close look to SS Brewtech's 10-gal stainless mash tun.

I've used different coolers over the years as MTs, and my recent one requires tipping the cooler up on a support to drain out a good bit of the runnings I need pre-boil, else I'd leave a good 0.5 gal behind.

No bueno in my book.

If I can keep my wife away from using my reward dollars on Amazon, I stand a fighting chance of pulling this off and breaking in a new MT in a few weeks, once the new floor is in (our flooring guy will be using our garage, where I mash/sparge/boil, as a temporary workshop during this process).

Are you going SS Brewtech because want to use direct heat?

Nevermind. I just saw their insulated mashtun. Looks nice.

even though I don't direct fire I still bought an uninsulated mash tun.  just wrapping a blanket around it keeps temps reasonably stable and it leaves the option open in the future.

I did have to mess around with the method of draining it to not have a lot of dead space.  hopefully the brewtech one was better designed in that regard.

That is a nice looking unit, I like the zero deadspace.

Assuming they used good insulating material, that SS Brewtech has it all. The drain below the false bottom is a great design. Better than the tubes that dip down and siphon the wort back up.

It is essentially two 10 gallon SS boil kettles fitted together, with some extra stuff. At $400.00, it is very nicely priced. Even the lid is insulated.

Next time I win the lottery . . . . .

Next time you win the lottery you will get a regular MLT with a RIMS or HERMS to adjust temps .?

I can add a herms to my existing MLT. It is pretty much a Denny picnic cooler special.

But a cooler will never be shinny.

Been there, done that.

But my Igloo cooler is paid for, and it works. For many years, it has been my old reliable.

You will be happy to learn this weekend I ordered a Spike stainless steel 10 gallon kettle to replace my old grungy aluminum stock pot.

My cooler worked but warped and I worried about the heat and plastic.

I have a spike MLT and BK and they are very nice units.  Much heavier than the old Bayou Classic I had before.

Just pulled the trigger on this one.  Should arrive by the end of next week, thereabouts.

Looking forward to breaking this bad boy in.

Brief update: not impressed so far.

Tried attaching the ball valve and hose barb; both only went on a couple of turns before they wouldn't turn any further, but were not fully attached/seated. Makes me think the threading is off.

Tried to find a customer svc phone number, but apparently SS Brewtech doesn't have one, and the only real way to contact them is by email.

Not a good first impression at all. Will likely end up returning this mash tun and stick with the cooler i've been using.

I noticed Chapman makes a similar product.

Are you using an SS Brewtech supplied valve? If SS Brewtech had customer service contact you could beat them up for a valve that fits/works.

If they do not give you the chance to give them an opportunity to correct the issue, get out the roll of shipping tape.

The paper work that came with the equipment has no contact information? Odd or stupid.
