I seems the White Labs positions this as a catch-all strain for doing German ales. As I build up my yeast library, I want to keep it as streamlined as possible. Has anyone played around with this yeast? Does it really do both styles justice?

I haven't used it and after reading the description I probably won't in the near future. Personally I would use the 029 and 036. And I prefer the Wyeast equivalents........

White labs, just can't see an English Ale and an Alt brewed with the same yeast. Here's a nice comparison.........

I wouldn't use it either just based on the description. It says low attenuation, so it won't be good for alts. It also says clean, so it won't have that distinctive Kolsch flavor either. My recommendation would be 1007 or WLP320 for alts and 2565 for Kolsch.

Have you tried the WLP036 for Alts?

WLP036 makes a really nice alt, it is an extremely low floccer though so needs extended cold conditioning/lagering.

No but my understanding is that it's the same as 1007. UCCS only clones Wyeast strains for the most part and I have to order WL strains. So I use mostly Wyeast.
