I made a Pale Mild a month or so ago with WY1469. I overbuilt the starter for that beer and saved the remaining yeast (~125 billion cells) in a sterilized jar with the starter beer on top (which became crystal clear). Now about 4 weeks later I have made a starter with this saved yeast. It took right off and fermented the starter but a funny thing has happened. Its been in the fridge 2 days now but the starter won't clear. The yeast has dropped but the starter beer still has a haze to it whereas it is normally pretty clear after 24 hrs in the fridge. It smells perfectly fine. Another starter made from the same bag of DME and WY1450 cleared just fine and is sitting in the fridge right next to it. What say you guys? Use it or lose it?

I'd say you are likely OK, had a few like that

It's not knowing why it's hazy that gives me concern I guess. Any theories?

the cells you used for the starter were less flocculant than the ones that made it into the beer originally? Water Ph of your starter? hell I don't know

how did you split the first starter? did you let the yeast settle out first and decant the clear starter beer on top?

No. I pulled it right off the stir plate and poured off the amount I wanted into a sterilized jar before it had any chance to settle. Then chilled both the starter for the Pale Mild and the saved extra yeast. They both cleared fine. I've done this with about 3-4 yeasts now and have had no issue. They have all cleared to the degree I am used to.

I've had that happen. No clue why. I used it and there weren't any problems. No clue why.

Thanks for this. On the coattails of this advice I pitched that starter anyways into the intended beer and it fermented just as expected. Crystal clear beer too.
