does it really matter much?  I've rarely bought yeast much younger than a couple of weeks old just due to when the LHBS received it's last shipment.  either way, jobs for people in asheville which is a win for them!

I know at my LHBS I never see yeast very fresh, at least not only a couple of weeks. Granted I haven't looked lately as I have given up. Oh and they also only carry White Labs and maybe 5 kinds from Wyeast. I have resorted to mail order for all yeast.

I've seen 1 week old Wyeast at my LHBS, once or twice, also seen 6 month old Whitelabs at the other one

Ritebrew will order from Wyeast like once a month or so. You can order directly from their website where they will tell you the ship date to them and when it ships to you. You can choose any yeast Wyeast makes. I think this includes the current PC yeasts as well. I have done this a couple of times and received 6-7 day old yeast to my door while living way out in the sticks. (they are 1 day shipping from me) Cost is $5.50 plus shipping.

https://www.ritebrew...ct-p/661000.htm

ETA: Yes it includes the current PC yeasts as well as brett and lacto.

In terms of establishing Asheville as the east coast hub of craft brewing, yes, it does.

It will make a huge difference for east coast breweries. I imagine a 10bbl pitch of yeast is $800 + $100 for 1 day shipping across the country. ECY is trying to establish itself too among others and I'm guessing it's cutting into white labs profits. Makes sense for them to add a hub out east.

I was thinking from the homebrewing perspective but if it's good for the breweries that's never a bad thing.

Well thats where they make their real money. $1000 - $2000 per pitch, service 100+ breweries,

Yeah, I doubt homebrewers are their key business.Sierra, Oskar Blues, and New Belgium have moved or will move to the Asheville area. I understand Stone is to build a big campus in Virginia. Don't know of any of those are clients of theirs, but that's a big volume of craft beer moving this way - though I'd guess the big guys handle their own yeast.

well it was stated as "great news" so I assumed that meant for us.  I pretty much only drink my own beer so while I like to see craft beer doing well it's not my primary concern.

I see it as fresher yeast that is not traveling across the country. I think that is good news.

the freshness I'm not as concerned about - the extra day or two of shipping is way down in the noise for the freshness of the yeast I'm usually buying.  avoiding the actual trip is a good point though - you can never be sure of what conditions the shipment was exposed to.

I think it's sorta like stepping over dollars to pick up Pennys in terms of freshness and/or viability, considering all of the starter posts located around these parts.... I think the best part or subsequent Kudos is just that WL is setting up shop on the East coast. So, there. UPS or FEDEX still get you your stuff regardless of proximity. You make a starter (typically) the rest is history.

That is more along the lines of what I was thinking.

Adding location.  Video was more of a Chamber of Commerce commercial.
