This is my go to, but here is the trick. DON'T BUY SACKS... you pay actually shipping on that. By 10 lb bags and buy enough to get the free shipping with an order of $59 or over. I'm not sure where you live but now that they have a Pittsburgh warehouse in addition to the California one I get my order in about 3 days.

Looks like 10 pounds is 11.29
50 is 36.99
I will get a shipping cost to FL.
update that is a win by a dollar and coin. :-D
Nice tip.

Our club buys through a local brewery. I pay about $28 for a 50 lb. bag of Rahr and around $33-35 for a 55 lb. bag of Best.

Do you ever weigh the malt in the bag? I weighed out a bag of Rahr and it was 49lb, not 50. I wonder how often that happens.

I've seen that as well on both sides of the reported weight.

I'd hate to have to do a statistical analysis on my weight for batches to be consistent at a small brewery.

never really thought about it - I guess I figured they had a giant scale.

If you are triple or quadruple brewing on a small system you don't want to have to measure out small amounts of base grain. You make your recipes in multiples of sacks (so I've heard). I guess you could make small silo and dump the sacs into it, then weigh out a discrete amount, but that costs extra money, which most small breweries aren't willing to spend.

I would suspect things would average out, unless they are weighing their thumbs too.

Depends on the size of the system. On 10BBL that might not be a big problem. On 1 or 2 BBL you might see some inconsistencies in OG.

Nope, and it was only off by a lb. I doubt I'd notice or care.

well, let's look at that....1 lb. in 5 gal. give you about 5 points at 75% efficiency. So, in one bbl. you divide by 6 aand a bag being off by a lb. would be 1 point or less. Half that in 2 bbl. Sure, with multiple bags being off it could compound that, but in a brewery that small there are so many things that can effect your efficiency I think you'd have a hard time pinning a small discrepancy on the weight of the malt.

Just erks me as a variable that should be more controllable. I would think that the maltsters should be able to get better than 2% accuracy on their fills.

I can get a 50lb bag of Great Western malt delivered to my door from Morebeer for the same exact price as driving 45 minutes each way and buying 50lb of Briess malt at Alternate Beverage in Belmont.

That's because Alt Bev sucks. Way over priced and no selection. Besides Jess is a nut job and so are some of his policies. Do you know anyone with a hook up at Country Malt Group? To bad they moved though as they were right in your backyard.

Has anybody used any Riverbend Malt (from Asheville, NC) I emailed and Brent replied that they sale to homebrewers for $1/lb. Not super cheap but I plan on getting some and trying it out as soon as I make it to Asheville. According to my email the best days for homebrewers to stop by are Tuesday and Friday afternoons.
