My wife has heard me threaten to buy a cask too many times. A good woman, she decided to take care of the problem for me for X-mas. Only thing is…. she ordered a firkin (10.8gal) and not a pin (5.4gal.). I make 5 gallon finished batches so the firkin is too big for me for standard use. I am thinking shipping for the return is going to be prohibitive and keeping it (and still ordering a pin) may be the better option. There is maybe once a year I could make and then dispose of 10 gallons of beer while still fresh. What other creative uses do you guys know of for a firkin?

I got a firkin problem here

Fill it up and toss some Brett in there and let it age then have a party!

I haven't used one but a cask breather allows you to keep cask beer fresh for much longer.

That has been thought of. Good idea. Might be tricky to get the carbonation right but doable.

That's on the list of things to get. It just takes me quite a while to go through 5 gallons of one beer let alone 10.

Take a gravity reading and when you think you are within 4 points or so from expected FG cap it and let it naturally carb. It is little tricky but people have been doing it for years so it should be very doable.

Don't really know any around here other than a few friends who dabble and make band-aid juice.

firkin band aid juice...
I think I know the answer though. 10 gallon batches immediately followed by a party at nettles house!

This I am sure is going to happen at least once.

Put it up on Pro-brewers classified. I have 4 firkins left from a festival I ran. Was able to sell to local brewpub. Just sell the firkin, tap & softgoods can be used when you get your pin.

Gravity feed. At least until the process is reliable and consistent. Even the refurbished Angrams are like $360.00
