New mill came in last week. I have a motor and stand. My buddy owns a conveyor/farm equipment building business for processing oranges and stuff and he's making a stand and hopper. I can't wait to use it! No more shitty LHBS mill. The mill at the LHBS uses brass bushings and since they started their brewery on top of all the homebrewers using it they have worn that thing out. The bushings have wallowed out oval shaped slots in the aluminum housing and the crush is very inconsistent since the roller gap changes as it turns.

 

This has caused me a lot of headaches in the consistency of my batches. I get about half powder and half uncrushed grain when I only did one run through the mill. Totally screwed up my belgian golden strong efficiency.

 

Anyway, I should have that bad boy rocking in about a week!

Yeah, I went for 12-13 years of homebrewing before getting my mill. Got the big hopper, use the drill on it and boom, nice, even crush. I left mine (BarleyCrusher) on the default gap setting (.036 or something?) and never changed it. It's really nice to order uncrushed grains, buy sacks of base malt, etc. and crush it right before you mash. Surprised it took you this long! Cheers.

I have an adjustable Schmidling Malt mill. I chewed off part of the axle driving it with a drill. It's hooked up to a belt/pulley with a motor now. It works great.

I have the same thing hooked up to a bodine gear reduction motor.  She has been bullet proof for me.

Got the bare bones mill, no stand or hopper. It was a lot cheaper that way. Don't let the prices scare you.

 

The box he sent it in was built like a tank. The mill is too. It ought to work for a long time.

I'm an engineer. I've seen how long those bushings last on the cheaper ones, and I know quality machine work. This mill is built like a tank. The rollers are mounted on closed sealed bearings and it's a 3 roller instead of two. The bottom roller is adjustable. The bearings are likely around $40 each.

 

We have a motor and stuff, and my buddy is building the stand and hopper. The grist will dump into a small HDPE garbage can.

My buddy had all of the other stuff except the stand so those are freebies. Wood is cheap for the stand part so I got about $100 into everything else except the mill.

The mill was about $550. The rest of it was about $100. About twice as much as a monster mill, but it's definitely a high quality product.

I got this mill, full ball bearings. And cheap.
