After homebrewing for the last 5 1/2 years in an apartment and then a townhome I finally get into a house of my own.  My wife, who I love dearly, got me into this hobby, then bought me a 3 gallon keg set up 2 years later so I could bring home brew to big family functions, now got me this:

It's an old Philco fridge. $45 at a garage sale.  Needs some sanding, some paint and maybe a new seal down the road.  But it keeps cold, it's been at 36dF for the last 3 days.  So last night I racked my first batch of beer brewed at the new house in my kegs and put them in the fridge to chill.  Today, I'm kinda ashamed to say it but I used the crank and shake method on the little keg.  Went to do some chores and came back and poured my first beer on tap at the new house, in it's new beer fridge home!

NIce. Now I see why it's such a good idea to keep SWMBO happy with the recipes you choose to brew. Good lady.

Nice. Are you going to ferment lagers in that thing too?I hate to go down this road but I feel I should mention that the electricity that thing consumes may make it easier to get a new, energy efficient fridge. I only say this because I literally have 4 fridges dedicated to brewing and one of those is a 1970s behemoth of a General Electric fridge that I bet is costing me $$$$$$ to run every month where in the long run it would be cheaper to get something new. Just a thought JP and I don't mean to be Debbie Downer. Bwah, bwah, bwaaaah. :P

It's ok Ken, I already thought of that but don't really care.  I'm sure I'll get a newer one but this will most likely be a project to refinish, reinsulate, etc over the winter.  I'm just pumped to not have to bottle.  Lagers... well until I get another fridge I'm still on with the swamp cooler with the lid... works good, not too much work.  I'm good with it.

That fridge is classic. Worth running it for the retro vibe.

True. My Dad had an old-school fridge in his garage that looked like that. It had chrome accents and the brand name (Leonard?) was in a chrome script that looked really cool. It was originally white and he asked me to help him paint it. We carefully took all the chrome off and cleaned it and then painted it with a chrome paint. He painted the fridge a sort of camo-green which at the time I did not care for but once the chrome accents were put back into place, it was a thing of beauty. The chrome handle pointed up and you pulled it towards you to open the door and it was a ####ing tank, no question. Okay, JP... you gasta keep that fridge, dress it up and high electric bills be damned!

If I redo this thing I will pull all the fiberglass insulation out and hit it with foam, then replace the seal then possibly get a new compressor and it would be a rockstar.  I plan to paint this thing bright red with chrome accents.

Nothing wrong with an Old dependable fridge. I have one myself, and it consumes more electric than my newer models.

Fill that top section with 2-liter plastic water bottles(or hops) , keep it full and it will help maintain cold.

you can just bottle your next batch, and use that time to refurb the fridge
