Well, I've been threatening for years to do this.  Now I have a line on a reportedly great TIG guy who specializes in sanitary welds.  Not exactly local: 1 1/2 hour drive from my house.

I've started the mods, so there is no going back. The plan:

  • Remove the bottom of the Blichmann 27 gal Ferminator where that wimpy dump ball valve connects & replace with a 2" tri-clove weld stub. Butt weld (excuse the term) the stub to the conical.
  • Enlarge the racking port & install a 1 1/2' tri-clove weld stub there.
  • Replace the sometimes leaky compression racking port "O" ring with a tri-clove cap with welded assembly and Teflon seal.

Last night I turned the threads off of the pipe nipple and reamed a matching hole in a tri-clove cover.  That's a bear in work hardening SS!  The racking port tube flare pretty much matches the remaining nipple OD and will be TIg'ed in place there.  All other work will be done by folks with actual talent as opposed to myself who doesn't want his ineptitude to trash a $900 conical.

Eventually, when I can find someone who will rent it to me, a stud welder (excuse again please) and place a dozen 10-24 or whatever 1/2" long studs to capture 50' of 1/4" copper tubing around the conical and terminate in some sort of QD.

I was generously donated a water cooler for a chiller.  So that's what started this whole thing.

Pictures forthcoming when I have something interesting to post.

opinions folks?

So you are gonna wrap copper coils around it to control ferm temps. Very nice.

Why not just sew a neoprene jacket for it to contain the copper? Insulation kills two birds with one stone.

Well, Neoprene wrap is going to be used.  I think Flying Dog had 2" thick stuff on theirs.  Sewing the stuff is out for me.  See talent disclaimer above.  I just didn't think it would hold the coils in tight enough to the conical.  So I opted for CLAMPS!!!

Got to be a seamstress in town that could do it.

I was considering putting tape over the coils, making a form and spraying with expanding foam.

I mean, What could go wrong????

I was gonna say you should redneck engineer it with some duct tape over the coils on the bottom and then let the coils rest on each other. Then wrap them, but spray on foam would be even better.

Yea, some one on the old green board was doing that.  That's where I got the idea.  The trick is to create an acceptable outer form that will stay since the foam itself is not very pretty.

OK, to be honest, it's fugly.

Seriously, I'm not really sure what to do here yet.  It's like Hans Solo: "I'm making this up as I go."

The racer side of me sez gel coat and fiberglass.

The woodworker side wants a Cocobolo veneer.

The F1 addict sez MEGA Carbon Fibre baby!!!

The practical side says; "Can we whomp this up with 1/2" good one side plywood and Kreg pocket hole screws?"
